Stage and Internship
Who is eligible?
All students are eligible for curricular internships, provided that they have included the internship option in their study plan.
Each student can start a curricular internship during the second academic year of ECGS.
Duration
A curricular internship entitles students to the acquisition of 9 ECTS. Internship activities can be linked to the final dissertation or can be independent from it. In any case, the internship must be completed before the final examination, in order to get the credits.
What kind of internship?
Students can carry out two types of curricular internship: Internal Internship (within UNIMI) or External Internship (in any entity other than UNIMI, in Italy or abroad). The choice between an internal or external internship is entirely up to students. Regardless of the choice and before starting the activities, students need to identify a University tutor, who will have the task of ensuring the success of the training experience of the internship. The tutor should be an expert on the subject (research field) of the activity related to the internship.
Internal Internships are carried out within the University of Milan through performing training activities in laboratories and research groups, usually within the ESP Department. Upon approval, internships with any UNIMI professor or researcher are also possible as long as the planned activities meet the ECGS training goals.
Choose your internship
Students choose the subject (research field) they are interested in and contact directly professors in order to discuss availability and possible research topics. Students might find useful to check a non-exhaustive list of subjects here, to get an idea of internal internships topics available: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1O2_WE45h4pZvjrSbOBUucuCpjpBcMyu799LdNUacQvw/edit?usp=sharing . Once students have identified their UNIMI tutor and arranged an internal internship topic and activity, they need to fill out and submit the online form to officially open their internship also within ECGS.
End of internal internship
At the end of the internal internship, students must submit to their tutor a detailed report of the activities carried out during it. They are also required to officially close their internship within ECGS by filling out and submitting the related online form.
The credits planned for ECGS Internships (9 CFU) will be assigned by signing up to one of the dedicated rounds and only after the submission and the approval of the closing form.
Students can acquire credits also through interning at any of a large number of external entities, including private companies, public institutions, national and international organizations, professional firms etc., either in Italy or abroad. Due to insurance coverage reasons, any external entity is required to sign an agreement with Unimi (COSP office). Please see the section “General Information (COSP)” below for links and procedures.
Choose your internship
Also in the case of external internship, students have to identify an UNIMI tutor. The tutor should be an expert on the subject (research field) of the activities related to the internship and provide educational support to the students involved in the project internship. All ECGS and UNIMI professors can be internal UNIMI tutors.
Students need to find the external entity where to carry out their internship. They could:
- contact directly a company/institution of choice;
- consult the online internship board made available by COSP.
Once students have identified their UNIMI tutor and arranged an external internship activity, they need to fill out and submit the online form to officially open their internship also within ECGS.
Please note that the bureaucratic procedure for external internships is handled entirely by COSP and, if contacted directly by students or professors, both national and international companies and institutions and students are required to follow the instructions on page Activating an internship abroad.
During the internship
Students have to register the daily activities and the hours worked on the attendance register.
Before leaving the Host Structure, students need to make sure that the attendance register is countersigned by the Host Contact Person.
End of external internship
At the end of the external internship, students must submit to their tutor a detailed report of the activities carried out during it. They are also required to officially close their internship within ECGS by filling out and submitting the online form.
The credits expected for ECGS Internship will be assigned once students have signed up to one of the dedicated rounds, only after the submission and the approval of the closing form.
In order to carry out correctly an internship within ECGS, students must fill out and submit an online form.
